Compare two PDFs, and see exactly what changed in the text.

Drop the old and the new version of a contract, a course or any other document. The tool shows every word that was added or removed, page by page, and makes a report you can keep – all in your browser.

Text differences, word by word, page by page

Guideline: up to 50 MB works well on most devices; for larger files a computer is more reliable than a phone. Check for yourself that your files aren't uploaded

Add 2 PDFs: first the old version, then the new one.

    How to compare two PDFs

    1

    Choose the two PDFs

First the old version, then the new one. Your files aren't uploaded: your browser reads them itself.

    2

    Compare

The text of both files is read and compared word by word over the whole document, also when pages were added or removed.

    3

    View and download

Every change is shown per page: removed text struck through, added text underlined. Download the report to keep it.

    Tips for comparing PDFs

    Old first, new second

The first file is the old version, the second the new one. Removed means it was in the old version and is gone from the new one. Wrong way round? Use Swap order.

    Jump from change to change

Use Previous change and Next change. Each heading gives the page of the new version, and the old page too when the text moved.

    Keep the report

The report is a single HTML file without scripts. It opens in any browser, and you can print it or save it as a PDF from there.

    Honest about the limits

Only the text is compared, not layout, images or formatting. Scans without a text layer cannot be compared (the comparison does no OCR); add a text layer first with OCR PDF. A strongly changed layout, such as new columns, can show extra differences.

    Questions about comparing PDFs

How do I compare two PDFs?

Drop the old version and then the new version into the tool above and click Compare PDFs. The changes appear below the tool, page by page, and you can download them as a report.

    What counts as a change?

Every word that was added, removed or replaced. Punctuation and capital letters count, extra spaces and line breaks do not. A word split with a hyphen at the end of a line is read as one word.

Are images, layout or formatting compared?

No. The tool compares the text only. A changed picture, colour, font or position is not shown. If the layout changed a lot, text that moved can show up as removed and added.

    Can it compare scanned PDFs?

Only if the scan has a text layer. A scan without one is just a picture: the tool then says it found no text, because it does not do OCR itself. You can add a text layer first with OCR PDF.

What does the report look like?

One HTML file with the same changes as on screen: a summary, then every page with changes, with removed text struck through (−) and added text underlined (+). It has no scripts and loads nothing from the internet.

    Are my files uploaded?

No. Both PDFs are read and compared in your browser, so your files aren't uploaded. A password-protected PDF works too: the tool asks for the password.
