The same password is tried on every file

Guideline: up to 50 MB works well on most devices; for larger files a computer is more reliable than a phone. Check for yourself that your files aren't uploaded

Tips for removing a PDF password

    Clear messages

An empty field on a locked file tells you the file needs a password; a wrong password tells you it isn't correct. So you always know which problem you have.

    Several files, one password

Add several PDFs that share the same password and they're all unlocked in one go. A file that has no password at all is skipped and named.

    Company encryption

Files encrypted with a certificate instead of a password, as some companies use, can't be unlocked here. Ask the sender for a version with a normal password.

    Honest about the limits

This tool never guesses or cracks passwords: without the password that opens the file, nobody can unlock it here. A file that only blocks printing or copying unlocks without one.

    Questions about unlocking a PDF

How do I remove the password from a PDF?

Drop the PDF in the tool above, type its password and click Unlock PDF. You get a copy that opens without a password.

Can you unlock a PDF without knowing the password?

No. This tool does not crack or guess passwords: you need the password that opens the file. A file that already opens without a password but blocks printing, copying or editing can be unlocked with an empty password field.

Which kinds of protection are supported?

All standard PDF encryption: RC4 (40 and 128 bit), AES-128 and AES-256. Both the password that opens the file and the owner password work.

    Is my password sent anywhere?

No. The password and the file stay in your browser; the file is decrypted on your own device.

Am I allowed to remove a password?

Only remove the protection from files that are yours or that you are allowed to change. The tool only works with the right password, so it cannot open files that are not meant for you.

    Does unlocking change the content?

No. Text, images, links and form fields stay as they are; only the encryption is removed.

Is there a limit on file size?

Not from our side. The practical limit depends on the memory of your own device; on a normal laptop or smartphone, documents of hundreds of pages usually work fine. If a file is very large for your device, the tool warns you first. Guideline: up to 50 MB works well on most devices; for larger files a computer is more reliable than a phone.

Does this work on my phone?

Yes, the tool works in any modern browser. Very large files can run out of memory on a phone, especially an older one; a laptop or desktop handles them better.
