Tables become real cells, numbers become numbers

Guideline: up to 50 MB works well on most devices; for larger files a computer is more reliable than a phone. Check for yourself that your files aren't uploaded

How to convert a PDF to Excel

    1

    Choose your PDF

Drag one or more PDFs into the tool or click to browse. Your browser reads them itself; your files aren't uploaded.

    2

    Choose the layout

One sheet per page keeps every page on its own sheet. Everything on one sheet puts all tables under each other, handy for filtering or totals.

    3

    Download the Excel file

The .xlsx file is made on your device and opens in Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Numbers or Google Sheets.

Tips for converting PDF to Excel

Codes and account numbers stay text

Numbers with a leading zero, such as 0475 or 007, and numbers longer than 15 digits, such as account numbers, stay text so no digit gets lost. Amounts in brackets, like (1,234), become negative numbers.

    Comma or dot, decided once

Whether a comma or a dot is the decimal mark is decided once for the whole document, from numbers that can only be read one way. Spaces and apostrophes as thousands separators work too.

    Sheets and empty pages

With one sheet per page, a page without text gets no sheet, so the sheet numbers can skip one. With everything on one sheet, the pages follow each other with an empty row in between.

    Honest about the limits

Tables are recognized from their lines, cell backgrounds and columns. A table that is only a picture in the PDF, such as a scan or a screenshot, can't be read as text: the tool tells you instead of giving you an empty sheet.

    Questions about PDF to Excel

How do I convert a PDF to Excel for free?

Add the PDF to the tool above, choose one sheet per page or everything on one sheet, and click Convert to Excel. The .xlsx file downloads straight away; with several PDFs you get one zip.

Will the numbers work in formulas?

Yes. Amounts, percentages and numbers with thousands separators become real numbers with their own number format, so sums and filters work. A number that could be read two ways, such as 1.500 in a document without other decimals, stays text, so no wrong value ends up in your sheet. Dates stay text too.

Does it work for scanned PDFs?

No. A scan is a picture of the page without readable text, so there is nothing to put in cells, and the tool tells you so. A PDF made from Word, Excel, an accounting program or a website works.

What happens to text that is not in a table?

It is kept as well, line by line and in the order of the page, so nothing gets lost. A line that repeats at the top or bottom of at least half of the pages is kept only the first time, and page numbers are left out.

Are merged and multi-line cells kept?

Cells that span several columns or rows in a table with lines stay merged. Text that wraps onto a second line inside a cell is joined back into one cell.

    Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser, on your own device. The PDF and the spreadsheet aren't uploaded.

    Which programs open the result?

The .xlsx file opens in Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers and Google Sheets.

Can I convert a bank statement to Excel?

Yes, if it is a PDF in which you can select the text, as most statements downloaded from online banking are. Tables are recognised and numbers become real numbers. Always check the totals afterwards; a scanned statement can't be read.
