A page number on every page, bottom centre unless you choose another position

Guideline: up to 50 MB works well on most devices; for larger files a computer is more reliable than a phone. Check for yourself that your files aren't uploaded

How to number the pages of a PDF

    1

    Choose your files

Add one or more PDFs and choose a style: 1, 2, 3…, Page 1 of N, or - 1 -. The number goes at the bottom centre unless you pick another position.

    2

    The number goes on top

Your browser writes the number as a short line of text on each page, upright as you see the page. The content of the page itself isn't touched.

    Tips for page numbers

“Page X of N” and the start number

N is the last number printed, not the number of pages. Start at 5 on a 10-page file and the last page reads Page 14 of 14. Keep the start at 1 if N should be the real page count.

    Leave the cover blank

Tick Don't number the first page (cover) and the cover stays clean; the next page gets the start number. Handy for a thesis or report with a title page.

    Numbers you can search

The number is real text, small and grey, so it can be selected and searched. It gets a little smaller on small pages and stays inside the visible area of cropped or rotated pages.

    Honest about the limits

The numbers are added on top of the page. Page numbers that are already in the document are not removed, so a page could show both.

    Questions about adding page numbers

How do I add page numbers to a PDF for free?

Drop one or more PDFs into the tool above, choose a number style ("1, 2, 3", "Page 1 of N", or "- 1 -"), and click Add page numbers. A number is printed at the bottom centre of every page (or at the position you choose) and the file downloads right away.

Can I choose where the page number appears?

Yes. Under Position you choose the bottom or the top of the page, on the left, in the centre or on the right. Bottom centre is the default. You can also choose the start number and leave the cover page unnumbered.

Will this replace existing page numbers already in my PDF?

No. The tool adds a new number on top of the page — it doesn't detect or remove page numbers that are already part of the document. If your PDF already has numbers printed on it, you'll end up with two.

Can I number multiple PDFs at once?

Yes. Add several files and they're all numbered the same way in one go, collected in a single zip download.

Do I need to install anything to add page numbers?

No. Numbering happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript — there's nothing to install and no account to create.

Which number styles can I choose?

Three: just the number (1, 2, 3…), the number with the total (Page 1 of 12) or the number between dashes (- 1 -). The word Page is written in the language of this page.

    Important to know

Conversion to Word or PowerPoint happens automatically. With complex layouts (tables, multiple columns), the order of text may differ from the original — always check the result yourself before using it for an exam, official document, or any other purpose where accuracy matters.
